Hot 97’s Summer Jam XX

Yesterday, I went to the 20th anniversary of HOT 97 Summer Jam held at Met Life Stadium! Summer Jam is very legendary in the hip hop community and as a new “New Yorker” it was always one thing on my bucket List. I have always heard about Summer Jam and have been to other radio concert, but none are as big or as legendary as New York’s Hot 97 one. They pulled out all the stops for this one, since it was their 20th anniversary.

I got there at the tail end of the summer stage performances, I didn’t know anyone preforming except Joey Bada$$, so I wasn’t excited. The night had a ton of surprise guest and over 30,000 fans eager to see the performances.

It started with New Jersey native Joe Budden, who performed his new stuff and his classic hit “Pump It Up”, he also brought out Tank to perform their hit “Put It Down”!

Next up was LA native, Miguel who really tore down the house and speed up his style for the hip-hop audience. He brought out J. Cole (whose new album “Born Sinner” drops June 18th) to perform J. Cole’s new hit “Power Trip” and the legend herself Mariah Carey to perform their smash “#Beautiful”.

Next was MMG’s Wale who really put on a great show and had tons of energy; I def will be getting his new album “The Gifted” on June 25th”. Wale brought out Meek Mill, who did his own little set, and had the crowd going crazy.

Chris Brown then hit the stage and started with his pop stuff, but soon went into his more r&b/hip-hop songs. The crowd really loved him, his voice was off (to me) and his dancing was the same, so I was like meh, but he still put on a good show. He brought out Sean Kingston and then brought out Fabolous to perform their hit “Ready”.

Fabolous then took over the stage and tore it down like a real BK artist. The crowd went crazy for him and so did I. Even though he might not be the biggest rapper, he still has hit on top of hits! He then brought out Pusha T who ripped the staged and introduced the Queen of rap Lil’ Kim! She had the crowd going wild! It was said that Foxy was also supposed to join him (which would have been epic) but she was late.

Next up was hip-hop legends Wu Tang clan! They celebrated their 20 years in the industry and made sure everyone knew they are still here for the long run!

2 Chainz then came out and brought his rachtet music along with him! I mean you might not want to like him, but you cannot help but love his music! His energy and stage performance was great! He also brought out Nicki Minaj who proved she is still hip-hop and that she still loves summer jam (since she refused to perform last year).

A$AP Rocky came out next and the Harlem native rep for his home city! He paid tribute to hip-hop legendary groups and brought out hip hop legends Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony! He also brought out SchoolBoy Q and Trinidad James.

Next, was another LA native Kendrick Lamar, now I wasn’t sure how I would feel about his performance because most of his songs are slow, but he really put on a great show. At the end of it he had Trinidad, A$AP, SchoolBoy Q, and the rest of his TDE crew on stage with him doing a hip-hop mosh pit. It really had the audience partying right along with them. Surprisingly, I thought he had one of the best performances of the night!

They saved a New York native French Montana for last and though some may say he is a lazy performer, he still had the audience going crazy with his signature “HANNNN”. His special guest made his performance that much greater! He first brought out DJ Khalid and Ace Hood, then he brought out two hip-hop titans Rick Ross and Lil Wayne. The crowd went SUPER crazy only to be taken by surprise when his performance was cut short (later it was revealed NJPD shut it down due to thunderstorms).

All in all it was a good show! I got to dance in the rain!!! Just that alone kind of made it worth going to; it only rained sporadically and for a total of 10 mins lol. There were a couple of slip ups in the show and it could of went a little faster, but it is hip-hop and nothing is ever in a timely manner. Beyonce and Jay were also in the building (but did not hit the stage :-)). Check out a couple performances below!
